At Pirate Shellfish, we are dedicated to producing premium, sustainably farmed oysters from the pristine waters of Blackfish Creek in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Our story is rooted in family, tradition, and a deep respect for the environment, with a mission to provide the finest oysters while preserving the local marine ecosystem for future generations.
Our Story
Founded by Clint Austin, Pirate Shellfish is a family-owned business built on generations of knowledge and experience. Clint learned the craft of shellfishing from his mother, Barbara Austin, a pioneering shellfisherwoman and champion oyster shucker. After years of working alongside her, Clint started his own oyster farm in 2008, where he combined traditional methods with innovative techniques to create a thriving, sustainable operation.
One of Clint’s proudest achievements is the creation of a massive oyster reef, which supports year-round harvesting and enhances the natural ecosystem. This reef, made from thousands of pounds of shell, reflects our commitment to sustainable practices that not only provide top-quality oysters but also nurture the environment.
Our Mission
At Pirate Shellfish, our mission is simple: to produce high-quality oysters while maintaining the health and vitality of Wellfleet’s waters. We believe that sustainable aquaculture is key to ensuring the future of our local marine life, and we work tirelessly to build an oyster farm that benefits both our customers and the environment.
Family Tradition
Pirate Shellfish is more than just a business—it’s a legacy. Clint’s passion for shellfishing is part of a family tradition passed down through generations. His two sons are already showing interest in the farm, and Clint hopes to one day see them continue the work he started, making Pirate Shellfish a true multi-generational enterprise.
